Milling and turning use different machining approaches, and some parts require both. Give candidate shops a model and drawing so they can assess the process, setups, and any additional operations. Ask which work is performed in-house and which is subcontracted.
Check the working envelope and materials
Confirm the part size, stock form, alloy, quantity, and critical tolerances. Ask about the available axes, fixturing approach, inspection equipment, and experience with similar work. A CNC capability label is a starting point for that conversation.

Can I filter CNC shops by certification?
Yes. Atlas includes filters for listed certifications and registrations. Confirm current status, scope, and applicability with the supplier before placing an order; Atlas does not independently certify those claims.
Does a CNC listing guarantee five-axis machining?
No. Confirm the specific machines, axis configurations, part-size limits, and programming capabilities with the supplier. A general milling or turning listing does not establish every machining capability.
Should I send a STEP file or a drawing?
Send both when available. The model communicates geometry, while the drawing communicates requirements such as tolerances, threads, finishes, and inspection notes. Confirm the supplier’s preferred file formats.
